As I was transitioning from teenager to young adult, I was terrified. It felt like I was alone and having no idea where my life was going, and I made some bad decisions. I had learned that nothing was going to be just given to me anymore. I had to figure out how to become my own person as I turned 18. You are encouraged to move out of your parents’ house, to go to college and university or get a job. Learning to be an adult is one of the hardest things you will have to do in your life but as life goes and you get older, it will get easier.
Each person is different and we all have own way doing things, so be you.

Moving into adulthood

The transition from 17 to 18 is one of the biggest changes that will happen to you in your life. Transitioning from teenager to young adult will come with many downfalls but also many positives. As you go into adulthood, this change will not be an easy one but it is very doable. It is going to be tough and strange, you are going to feel like to whole world is against you, that no one wants to help but that is not true at all. Your family will be the first to say “figure it out” because they aren’t going to do it for you anymore. You have to take charge of your own life now. That will mean, waking yourself up in the morning, making your own bed or even making your own meal. Start with easy and steady steps to get you going, a routine will help you structure healthy patterns. Even though it will be hard, there are places and people that are here to help.

  1. As a mother of a seventeen year old, I often try to keep communication lines open with my son. It is a frightening idea that your child is a young adult and has to learn to navigate the world on their own, but it is necessary. As a parent, it is imperative that we allow latitude for this transition into a new season. What sometimes our sons forget is that we are still very close but just stepped back, and we are still at an arms reach.
